Does traveling north waste moer gas than traveling south?

Ok, so here is what i was told. Traveling north uses more gas than traveling south because north is higher on a map and south is lower on a map. Is this true? so if i was traveling the same time one way id use moer gas becuz its higher. in like hight or something. is this true everywhere? if so, why dont people just travel south and not go back north. thay could save alot of monies traveling just south
